There's only one answer to that.

Lidna:
Why can't I just undress david tennant and cover him in chocolate? I mean if he's uncomfortable with me being there at the time, a photo would be better than nothing!

eBuyer optical drives section

24 quid (including VAT - probably close to 30 quid once you add postage). May I recommend LG, Lite-On, Pioneer, Sony or (at a push) NEC. Lite-Ons, Pioneers and Sonys are generally quiet and reliable, while LGs are noisy but bomb-proof. NECs are cheap imports, but not too nasty. My external drive is a Lite-On, while my laptop has an LG writer.

Technology-wise, you should go for a drive that claims to write both DVD+R and DVD-R discs and at least one of their rewritable counterparts (DVD+RW and/or DVD-RW). Generally a drive that is advertised as DVD±RW can deal with anything. Drives that can write dual-layer discs or DVD-RAM are a bonus, but you're unlikely to ever see either of these types of disc.

All drives should work under Win98, but your mileage may vary - I haven't tested any of the newer drives under the ancient OSen.

Ordering from ebuyer.com, dabs.com, or (if they're doing them cheap) novatech.co.uk will likely be cheaper than buying from high-street stores. The cheapest at the moment appears to be ebuyer, but only by a quid or so.

One of these or these is probably a good bet.

Lidna:
Ok, you guys are good at computer related things...

I would like to buy a drive that will read and write both dvds and cds. I also need it to not cost the wealth of a small country :P can anyone recommend a good one that will also work with windows 98?
